Omar Villanueva, was born in Matamoros, Mexico. He holds a Master's degree in Classical Guitar Performance from the University of New Mexico where he studied under the guidance of Michael Chapdelaine. He is a multifaceted guitarist who performs classical and popular music from Latin-America. He has recognized as a Virtuosso “requinto” performer in the USA.

    Villanueva started his musical studies at Mexico State Conservatory, where he obtained his first degree in Classical Guitar Performance under the guidance of Francisco Gil. He has won awards in two music competitions in the United States, including 1st place in the 2004 Joyce Walker Competition, organized by the Professional Music Teachers of New Mexico, and 1st place in the UNM Concerto Competition of 2005. He also won 2nd place in the first Chamber Music Competition of the Mexico State Conservatory in 2003.

    Villanueva has performed for audiences in the United States and Mexico in several music festivals, including 2000 and 2002 “Festival Internacional de Otoño” in Matamoros, the 2001 “6to Festival Internacional de Tehuacan Puebla”, the “Festival de la Frontera 2001” in Matamoros, the “Festival San Juan del Rio” of 2002, and the 2004 and 2006 “New Mexico State Fairs” etc. He has performed with the University of New Mexico Symphony Orchestra as well. His most recent appearances includes a concert at the Democratic National Convention in Denver, Colorado with the Latin band “Quemozo” (August/2008).

     He has taken Master classes with renowned guitarists like Antonio López (Mexico), Manuel Espinas (Mex/Cuba), Thomas Patterson (USA), Lorenzo Micheli (Italy), Paul Odette (USA), Stephen Robinson (USA), Carlos Perez (Chile), and Scott Tennant (USA).

Villanueva has been awarded several scholarships in Mexico and the United States including:

- “FONECAT” Scholarship (State Funds for Arts and Culture of Tamaulipas) 2002, in the category of Artist Individual Development.

- “Friends of Music” Scholarship, for talented musicians of the Music Department at the University of New Mexico.

- “FONECAT” Scholarship 2006 in the category of Artist Individual Development.

- Hector Garcia Scholarship for talented Classical guitarists of UNM.

- Mexican Consulate Scholarship Jose Teran for talented Musicians from Mexico 2005.

Currently, Villanueva is an active classical guitarist and teacher of Latin-American music based mostly in Santa Fe and Albuquerque New Mexico. Omar also teaches guitar lessons in Albuquerque at "Guitar Associates" and he offers workshops for local charter schools and UNM Continuing education.
